JACOBEAN COTTAGE

This 17th century cottage has been an ongoing renovation project for some years. This is a rustic property with no straight lines and no level floors, so any carpentry has to suit the building perfectly. The challenge has been to accommodate the customer's ideas and remain sensitive to the character of the property.

Featured are the kitchen ceiling, clad in pine tongue and groove and finished in high gloss fire retardant varnish, a knee high pine book case and window head finished in clear beeswax, and a full height shelf wall constructed from pine finished in walnut tint beeswax. This has given the room a pleasant and unusual character.

The bathroom ceiling is also clad in pine tongue and groove, solving ongoing issues with a problematic fibre board ceiling. The bath has a pine panel to match the ceiling and a beautiful solid Iroko splash back, all finished in silicone waterproofing and yacht varnish for complete waterproofing.

Outside, a heavyweight rose arch has been built to support an existing ancient plant which had collapsed the existing metal arch. This had to be done without interfering with the entrance steps or the stone wall through which they lead or damaging the plant itself, making for a tight fit and awkward placement. Accumulated water and wind damage to the south west fronted summer house meant some repairs were in order, and a new door and window were constructed from tanalized timber.
